Careers in Pharmacy How to enter?

To enter this field, you are required to go for Diploma in Pharmacy (D. Pharma) or a 4-year Bachelor in Pharmacy (B.Pharm.). Eligibility for D. Pharma/B.Pharma is a pass in 10+2 or equivalent exam physics, chemistry, maths or biology. Admission to B.Pharm is made on the basis of Common with Entrance Test conducted at state level. Further you can opt for M.Pharma or higher studies. At the masters level (M Pharm) specialization is available in various streams. And after M.Pharm candidates can go for Ph.D. programme in some specific areas.

Nature of Work

In order to have an idea about what the study of pharmacy and its application is all about we must know what are the functions of a Pharmacist. A Pharmacist’s job is to prepare, mix, compound or dispense drugs and medicines, ointments, powders, pills, tablets and injections on the prescription of a medical practitioner,

dentist or veterinarian. He also requires to explain the mode and precautions regarding the use of medicines dispensed. In a hospital pharmacy, he might also be required to prepare special formulations, normally not available in the market; to assist the physician in rendering necessary information about various drugs, their contra-indications, incompatibility, etc. He may be required to give intravenous injection, render first aid in emergent cases when no doctor is immediately available. He maintains proper records according to various Government Acts governing the profession of pharmacy.

In a retail Pharmacy (Commercial) he has varied duties, including buying and selling of related items demanded by the public. He may also have an independent work and own a Pharmacy. If he has obtained higher education, he may manufacture medicines and analyse them for purity and strength. As a Drug Inspector or Government Analyst he is to make sure that the drugs of standard quality are manufactured and sold. As a Medical Representative he is to keep medical practitioner informed about the new drugs and treatments. He may take up teaching as a profession or do research in drugs and medicines in a pharmaceutical laboratory.

Manufacturing concerns, research laboratories, hospitals and dispensaries, etc., both in public and private sectors advertise the vacancies in newspapers and conduct interviews. Applications can be made in response to advertisements. Quite often, these vacancies are also notified to Employment Exchanges. Higher posts under State and Central Governments are filled through the respective Public Service Commissions.

Your advancement to senior and better paid posts usually depend on technical qualifications and experience. The pharmacist who has obtained requisite qualifications and experience can take up the position of Chief Hospital Pharmacist. In drug control administration an Inspector is promoted to the post of Analyst. In teaching line the promotion is from lecturer to Assistant Professor and then to Professor.

What the Merchant Navy offers as a career

Indian Merchant Navy comprises passenger vessels, cargo, liners, tankers, ore carriers and other types of specialised ships. These ships are operated by public and private sector shipping companies and manned by trained navigators, marine engineers and crews.

The responsibility for adequate training of personnel for the Indian Merchant Navy lies with Government of India functioning through the Ministry of Surface Transport. Accordingly, a number of training institutions under the direct administrative control of the D.G. of Shipping have been established.

Functional set up

Under the main departments of the ship of Merchant Navy, the first is Deck Department which is headed by the Master, a Chief Mate or a Captain who is overall master of the ship.

Next in hierarchy is the First Mate.
Second Mate who provides assistance to the above two officers in discharging their duties. Third Mate followed by Harbour Master, Pilot of the ship and Serang.

Engine Department is headed by a ship engineer, assisted by 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th Engineers and other staff. This department also has an Electrical Officer and Radio Officer and finally sea canny who steers vessel. The core job of engineers of engine department is to operate, run, watch, and do maintenance both preventive and breakdown. Next comes the Service Department, which is headed by a Chief Steward and Chief Cook, cooks, mess men, etc. Lastly, there are – Nautical surveyors, light keepers, dress divers and skin divers. The job of deck department is general management of the ship i.e to navigate, look after loading, unloading, personnel of both sides, their medical needs and so on. Also to deal with foreign nation’s harbour formalities, customs, coast guard, immigration, and health officers of the nation arrived. Deck side people are responsible for the overall safety of the vessel.

Selection of Officers

To be employed as a Navigating Officer on a merchant ship, it is necessary to obtain a “Certificate of Competency” under the regulations in force in India, relating to the examinations of Masters and Mates in the Mercantile Marine.

The first Certificate of Competency for the navigating officers who qualify from T.S. “Chanakya” is that of Second Mate (Foreign Going). After successful completion of three years degree course in Nautical Science on Training Ship “Chanakya” the cadet officer is required to complete one year in the deck department on board a merchant ship before becoming eligible for the grant of Second Mate (F.G.) certificate of competency. During this period he is given a nominal stipend. Candidates who pass the B.Sc (Nautical Science) examination, conducted by the University of Bombay, are eligible for remission of sea service and certain exemptions in the certificate of competency examination.

After possession of the certificate of competency of Second Mate (F.G.) such an officer is eligible to be appointed as 3rd officer/2nd officer on board a merchant ship and draws a handsome salary.

For subsequent promotion, he has to render further sea service to pass the higher examination namely First Mate (Foreign Going) and Master (Foreign Going). The certificate of competency as Master (F.G.) entitles the officer to become the Captain of a merchant ship. The competency examinations are conducted by the Ministry of Surface Transport through the Directorate General of Shipping, Bombay.

On the marine engineering side, the lowest examination relates to the Second Class Certificate of Competency. Examinations are conducted by the Ministry of Surface Transport in two parts ‘A’ and ‘B’. Candidates of MERI (Merchant Engineering Research Institute) in possession of final Passing out Certificates are exempted from Part A. Part B of the Second Class Certificate can be obtained after completion of the qualifying sea- service after obtaining Part ‘A’ of the certificate, unless exempted as in the case of MERI cadets.

After completion of the training in MERI, a cadet is taken in as a Junior Engineer Officer on a Merchant navy ship. Subsequently, a Junior Engineer, subject to satisfactory service and passing of requisite examinations, is posted as a Third Engineer, Second Engineer and ultimately a Chief Engineer of a ship. Examination for marine engineers are also conducted by the Ministry of Surface Transport through the D.G. Shipping, Mumbai.

Careers in Merchant Navy – Functions & Responsibilities

The navigating officers who qualify from Training Ship ‘Chanakya’ are responsible for the navigation of a ship, loading and discharging of cargo, maintenance of ship, safety of passengers and crew and observance of various national and international codes of conduct, insofar as they relate to sea transportation.

The marine engineer, from Marine Engineering Research Institute takes up the responsibility of operating and maintaining ship’s main engines and auxiliary machinery as also safety equipments. The highest post of navigating officer one can expect to attain on board a merchant ship is that of a Master of a Ship. While in the case of a marine engineer the highest post is that of a Chief Engineer of ship.

Employment for the trainees

Although Government undertakes no obligations to find employment for the trainees, T.S. Chanakya and MERI, the institutes assist them in getting suitable employment with the Indian Shipping Companies.

Remuneration
Pay & perks offered by merchant navy are excellent. A navigating officer and marine engineer gets Rs. 60000 p.m.approx. in India whereas Rs. 1,20000 p.m.approx. abroad. Prospects of promotion are directly linked to passing the requisite competency examination.

Careers in Naturopathy – Massage Therapists

Massage therapists massage clients and administer body treatments for relaxation and remedial purposes and generally work in three broad (sometimes overlapping) areas-remedial, relaxation and sports massage. Remedial massage is a paramedical massage treatment to assist in healing parts of the body which have been injured or left inactive due to age, illness or injury. Nature of Work

They are trained to perform the following tasks: diagnose a patient’s condition based on case history, physical examination, pathology tests, orthopaedic tests and neurological tests; take X- rays of the appropriate skeletal structure (if qualified to do so) and provide a report on them; assist in the restoration of normal function of the vertebral column and of the structures attached to that column, namely the skull, ribs and pelvis; restore mobility and alignment to fixated joint of the spinal column and of other body parts by manual adjustments or manipulation; provide care for the healing of muscle, ligaments and tendons; provide exercises to aid healing; advise on nutrition and lifestyle to help patients regain health and establish a balanced relationship between the psychological and the physiological functioning of the body; refer patients to other health professionals as appropriate; perform pre­employment examinations and workplace assessments; and provide certificates for insurance purposes, worker’s compensation, motor vehicle accidents and Department of Veterans Affairs beneficiaries.

Medical Imaging Technologists

Medical imaging technologists operate x-ray and other imaging equipment to produce radiographs (x-ray films) and other images which are used in the diagnosis and subsequent management of disease or injury.

Nature of Work

Medical imaging technologists may perform the following tasks:

(i) receive and interpret requests from medical practitioners for x-ray examinations to be performed on patients:

(ii) determine the appropriate imaging techniques which will provide diagnostic information for the doctor;

(iii) calculate details of procedures such as length and intensity of exposure to radiation and settings of recording equipment;

explain procedures to patients, ensure they receive the correct preparation for the procedure and make sure that any concern about radiation processes is minimized; correctly position the patient and imaging equipment to obtain the best image of the area being examined; ensure the patient’s welfare during the examination, including radiation safety; calculate the correct technical factors necessary to obtain the correct radiation exposure to the patient; develop the x- ray films; check films after they are processed to determine if any further views are necessary; and operate special equipment such as fluoroscopy equipment (which gives a moving image of the part being examined), angiography equipment (which images blood vessels) and computed tomography (CT) equipment (which gives cross-sectional) images of the body). Medical imaging technologists may specialise as sonographers who operate ultrasound machines and related equipment to produce images for medical diagnostic purposes.

Personal requirements include an interest and ability in science, the ability to work accurately and as part of a team and understanding approach.

Speech Pathologist

Speech pathologist, or therapists, diagnose, treat and provide management services to people of all ages with communication and swallowing difficulties. The problems may arise in the areas of speech, language, voice, fluency, hearing and swallowing.

Nature of work

Speech pathologists may perform the following tasks:

(i) determine the exact nature and severity of each client’s communication problems which may require the use of special equipment and test;

(ii) plan and carry out the most suitable treatment and management, taking into account the clients’ age, past and present social environment and physical and intellectual abilities;

(iii) treat children who are unable to communicate effectively for many reasons arising from conditions such as cleft palate, hearing loss, delayed speech or language development, cerebral palsy or emotional disturbances;

(iv) treat adults whose language, speech or voice has been affected by surgery, disease or disorders of the nervous system, brain damage or hearing loss;

(v) help in overcoming stuttering in both children and adults;

(vi) assess and treat children and adults who have difficulty in chewing and swallowing;

(vii) provide co­ordinated intervention by working closely with care givers and other professionals as part of a team; and

(viii) provide ongoing counselling advice and information to clients and families as an integral part of all treatment.

Personal requirements include a patient and tactful approach to people’s problems, being able to inspire confidence and cooperation, an interest in people and an interest in language and communication.

Cardiac Technologists or Clinical Measurement Technician

Cardiac technologists, or clinical measurement technicians, are health professionals who provide technical services for the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. As part of the cardiology team, they operate a range of specialist equipment which provides data that cardiologists and other medical practitioners use for patient care.

Nature of Work

They may perform: electrocardiography (ECG) – recording the electrical activity of the heart, from which the heart rate is measured and pattern and rhythm interpreted; ambulatory monitoring – fitting a portable ECG monitor to record the ECG over a 24- hour period. The tape is replayed and analysed on a computerised system; exercise ECG stress testing – assessing a patient’s cardiac response to exercise using a treadmill or stationary bicycle and ECG recording; pacemaker implant testing and, if necessary, reprogramming implanted cardiac pacemakers with computerised equipment; echocardiography – operating echocardiographic (ultrasound) equipment that scans the heart structures, measuring parameters such as chamber size, blood flow and valve abnormalities.

Personal requirements include a careful and analytical approach to work, with skills in working as part of a team, a sympathetic, supportive and professional approach to patients and an ability to learn independently.

Acupuncturists treat disorders and illnesses by inserting fine needles into the skin to stimulate the body’s defence mechanisms. They diagnose health problems through discussions with the patient, by checking the patient’s pulse and observing the patient’s colour, face and body features, nails, tongue and temperature variations in different parts of the body. Their work involves choosing the places at which needles should be inserted, based on a thorough knowledge of body systems and inserting needles under the patient’s skin and moving or manipulating them depending on the nature of the health problem. They use massage or heat treatment, such as warming to stimulate the acupuncture point using a slowly smouldering herb, called moxa.

Acupuncturists normally work on their own, but may also work within an established clinic in which other traditional forms of health care are practised.

How to become a Commercial Pilot

To become a commercial pilot in India, need Student Pilot Licence (SPL) for which you have to take an oral exam, in Air Regulation, Aviation Meteorology, Air Navigation and Technical subjects. If you have passed Xth class and attained the minimum prescribed age of 16 years, get security clearance and bank guarantee, you are eligible to appear in the oral examination for grant of Student Pilot Licence. This exam, is conducted at Government sponsored Flying Clubs in the country on the first Monday of every month. Further details can be had from any of the Government Sponsored Flying Clubs.

Secondly, it is also imperative to get a Private Pilot Licence which is possible only after you possess the SPL.

Commercial Pilot Licence

You should have passed 10+2 exam with Physics and Mathematics and must be between the age of 18-30 years. You also require PPL with flying experience during the preceding three years. 250 hours of flying (including 60 hours for the PPL) and 190 hours flying is necessary for obtaining a Commercial Pilot Licence. Of course Medical Fitness as mentioned above is also a must, which is held at New Delhi. An examination consisting of Air Regulations, Aviation Meteorology, Air- Navigation, Technical, Planning, has to be qualified for obtaining the CPL. Of the 250 hours of flying required as experience, 150 hours should be Solo, 25 Cross country, 10 hours of Instrument Flying and 5 hours Night Flying.

Commercial Helicopter Pilot Licence (CHPL)

You require Private Helicopter Pilot Licence (PHPL). This is given after passing a written exam on subjects related to aviation and 40 hours of flying training out of which 15 hours should be solo. Before you become eligible to get CHPL, you have to complete 60 hours of flying training and pass a written examination. Medical fitness, as prescribed by the authorities, is also a must.

Flight Attendant (Airhostess/Flight or Air Steward)

For making the journey of the passenger’s trouble-free, comfortable and safe a team of flight attendants on board consists of young men as flight pursuers and young women as air hostesses to assist the travellers. They help the passengers to settle down properly, coordinate security personnel, serve meals, take adequate emergency measures, make announcements about weather and places and looks after the sick and travel prone people.

The term used for male counterpart of an air hostess is ‘Flight Pursuer’ or ‘Air Steward’. Their work profile is identical to that of an air hostess. They check the cargo, keep an account of seats, handle duty-free items and serve drinks on board, collect money and help the hostesses to perform their duties efficiently.

Personal attributes
Stamina to put up with tremendous hard work and erratic hours that go along with the job; a pleasant personality; ability to work as a team player; good height, skin and eyesight and convincing power.

Pay and Perks
Average salary of a flight attendant initially ranges between Rs. 34,000 approx, per month, excluding perks. These figures may vary from airline to airline. The figures would climb up, depending upon experience and performance. However, there are opportunities of promotion to the rank of Senior Hostess/Steward, Cabin Supervisors, Training Manager as well as to the senior administrative positions.

If you are working in international airlines, your salary could be equal to what a pilot gets after a flight in India as flight attendants working in international airlines, generally get daily allowance in the currency of the respective country. Eligibility
Age Limit: In India, 19 is the minimum age requirement for a flight attendant. Airlines have specified the age limit as between 19-27. Educational Background: 10+2/equivalent or graduates (in any subject) are eligible to apply for air hostess training programme. Candidates holding diploma/degree in Hotel Management or Tourism management are preferred. You must possess a passport.

Physical Standards:
Height: A female flight attendant must have the height of 157.5 cms and the height requirement for male flight attendant is 163 cms. These are the minimum height requirement for Indian airlines. However, it may vary from airline to airline. For instance, minimum height requirement in Indian Airlines is 5’2″ while other airlines demand more height than that.

Weight:
Airlines want candidate’s weight to be in proportion to his/her height.

Eyesight: Most airlines prefer normal vision or minimum uncorrected distant vision of 6/24 in each eye. Correctable to at least 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other eye. If you are aspiring to work as a flight attendant and wear glasses, then switch over to contact lenses as early as possible. Power of your contact lenses should not exceed -2D (Minus Two Diopters).

Candidates who have undergone any eye surgery to improve their vision or to correct colour blindness, are not eligible to apply.

Teeth:
Healthy white teeth are one of the essentials of a good smile. Swimming has become mandatory requirement in all the airlines. Cleanliness – Flight attendant must take good care of their body cleanliness. Voice Quality: Flight attendant must have quality diction, good pace, proper pitch and be enthusiastic in speech so that listeners can easily understand all the spoken words.

Language Proficiency
A flight attendant must have a good command over English language. Fluency in any other international language is an added advantage but it is not mandatory in India.

Medical Fitness:
Flight attendants have to go through various medical fitness tests.

Selection is done on the basis of a screening test followed by a written test, interview and group discussion. Additional qualification like knowledge of any prominent foreign language, a degree or Diploma in Tourism always adds to your chances of selection.

The job entails booking and confirming reservation for passengers on scheduled airline flights. The ticket agents mainly help and guides the customer in planning the route and other arrangements using time tables, airline schedules, reference guides and tariff books, in short, the ticketing staff provide travel assistance to the clients.

Careers in Ayurvedic Medicine: Ayurveda is a combination of two Sanskrit words, ‘Ayur’ meaning life and ‘Veda’ meaning knowledge. Ayurveda originated around 600 BC in India. It is a life science which basically deals with the toxicology i.e. the study of the opposing effects of physical agents or chemicals on living organisms. Ayurveda is a combination of senses, mind, body and soul. It emphasizes that ‘Prevention is better than cure’.

Ayurveda explains that all matter is thought to be composed of five basic elements (panchamahabhutas) which possess the properties of earth, water, fire, wind, and space. These elements do not exist in isolated forms, but are always in a combination, in which one or more elements dominate.

Ayurvedic medicine, which originated in Vedic times, it has been in practice in India for the last five thousand years. It is rooted in India’s most cherished scriptures known as the Vedas. Ayurvedic Medicine is a comprehensive system of medicine combining natural therapies with a highly personalized approach to the treatment of disease.

There are several aspects to Ayurveda that are quite unique. It offers reference points for managing treatment decisions specific to each case. Ayurvedic theory is profoundly useful in analysing individual patient constitution and understanding variations in disease manifestation.

The branches of Ayurveda are Kayachikitsa (Internal Medicine), Bala chikitsa (Paediatrics), Graha chikitsa – Bhoota Vidya (Psychiatry), Urdhvanga chikitsa (Treatment of eyes, ears, nose, throat, and head), Shalya chikitsa (Surgery), Damstra chikitsa – Agada tantra (Toxicology),

Jara chikitsa-Rasayana (Gerentorology) and Vrishya chikitsa – vajikarana (Aphrodisiacs)

Special physicians who practise Ayurveda are called Vaidyas. They are known for promoting positive health, natural beauty, and long life.

One of the distinguished features of Ayurveda is that the ayurvedic medicines have no side effects. An Ayurvedic practitioner treats the patients with wide range of techniques including diet, herbal remedies, exercise, spiritual practices, and various healing modalities to bring a person into balance, etc. An Ayurvedic practitioner, diagnose the patient by feeling pulse rate, simple interrogation, checking blood pressure, etc.

Careers in Ayurvedic Medicine – How to enter?

Various courses are available in Ayurvedic colleges and Universities. At Undergraduate level 5Vi year BAMS is offered. Eligibility: (i) 12th Standard with Science (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology) and Sanskrit. Wherever provision and facilities for teaching Sanskrit as optional subject are not available at 12th Standard (Biology Science Group), the students with 12th Standard

(Biology Science Group) be admitted and Sanskrit be taught in main course. Or Uttar Madhyama of Sampumanand Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya with Science and English. Or Any other equivalent qualification recognised by State Governments and State Education Boards concerned with the examination, (ii) The Pre-Ayurved Course of one- year duration in respect of Uttar Madhyama

Or Higher Secondary/P.U.C preferably with Sanskrit or an examination equivalent there to and Pre-Ayurved course of two years duration in respect of Purvamadhyama or S.S.L.C./ Matriculation preferably with Sanskrit or an examination equivalent thereto, however, will continue till 1990 if the State Government or University so desires.

Notification is generally issued any time between June to August.

Selection of BAMS is through the same All India Entrance Examination as for MBBS. In the case of private medical colleges entrance examinations are conducted by the institutes individually.

After BAMS course, you can go for Postgraduate specialisations in DravyaGuna, Kaya Chikitsa, Kaumar Bhritya, Pancha Karma, Rasa Shastra, and Bhaishajya Kalpana, Roga and Vikriti Vigyan, Samhita, Shalya Tantra, Sharira Kriya, Sharira Rachana, and Swastha Vritta. For Post graduate study, the period of study is three years. Ph.D. is also awarded in Ayurveda which is of two years duration.

Careers in Ayurvedic Medicine – Employment Avenues

The job of a Ayurvedic Professional is challenging keeping in view the wide range of incurable diseases newly emerging diseases and failure of other system of medicine specially allopathic System of Medicine. Employment opportunities are available in government and private Ayurvedic hospitals, as supervisors in Ayurvedic massage/health centres, industries engaged in Ayurvedic preparing Ayurvedic medicines, as Professor in Ayurvedic colleges or as a researcher. Moreover, a degree holder in BAMS, can open his/her own pharmacy.

Careers in Ayurvedic Medicine – Pay and Perks

In government Ayurveda hospitals starting salary scale is around Rs 8000 to 10000. But, as you gain experience you earn handsome amount. In private practice the remuneration depends totally on the effort you put in and your professional reputation. Dedicated and competent practitioners can earn more.
