Careers in Civil Aviation – How to enter?

The basic degree required for becoming an aeronautical engineer is a B.E. or B.Tech. Many of the reputed engineering colleges and some of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in India offer degree and post-graduate degree courses in Aeronautical Engineering. Some polytechnics also offer diploma in aeronautical engineering courses.

You must pursue 10t-2 with physics, chemistry and Mathematics. Afterwards, go for degree/diploma programme in aeronautical engineering or mechanical engineering. If regular course does not suit you, you may consider ASI’s Associate Membership Examination, conducted every six months, leading to a qualification equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering.

Careers in Civil Aviation Operational Department

It is the key department because responsibility of all flying vocations as well as imparting training to the pilots is entrusted to it. The main functionaries in the department are- Flight Engineer, Air Craft Technicians, Air Hostess, Flight Purser, Pilot Officer. Flight Engineer has to make sure the smooth and efficient operation of the aeroplane. At the time of their appointment, they should be degree holder in aeronautics, mechanical and in electrical engineering. Air Craft Technician deals with maintenance of aircraft, its engines and other related equipments. To be an aircraft technician after 10 + 2, you must have a 3- year Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering.

Job of a Commercial Pilot

How to become a Commercial Pilot

To become a commercial pilot in India, need Student Pilot Licence (SPL) for which you have to take an oral exam, in Air Regulation, Aviation Meteorology, Air Navigation and Technical subjects. If you have passed Xth class and attained the minimum prescribed age of 16 years, get security clearance and bank guarantee, you are eligible to appear in the oral examination for grant of Student Pilot Licence. This exam, is conducted at Government sponsored Flying Clubs in the country on the first Monday of every month. Further details can be had from any of the Government Sponsored Flying Clubs.

Secondly, it is also imperative to get a Private Pilot Licence which is possible only after you possess the SPL.

Commercial Pilot Licence

You should have passed 10+2 exam with Physics and Mathematics and must be between the age of 18-30 years. You also require PPL with flying experience during the preceding three years. 250 hours of flying (including 60 hours for the PPL) and 190 hours flying is necessary for obtaining a Commercial Pilot Licence. Of course Medical Fitness as mentioned above is also a must, which is held at New Delhi. An examination consisting of Air Regulations, Aviation Meteorology, Air- Navigation, Technical, Planning, has to be qualified for obtaining the CPL. Of the 250 hours of flying required as experience, 150 hours should be Solo, 25 Cross country, 10 hours of Instrument Flying and 5 hours Night Flying.

Commercial Helicopter Pilot Licence (CHPL)

You require Private Helicopter Pilot Licence (PHPL). This is given after passing a written exam on subjects related to aviation and 40 hours of flying training out of which 15 hours should be solo. Before you become eligible to get CHPL, you have to complete 60 hours of flying training and pass a written examination. Medical fitness, as prescribed by the authorities, is also a must.

Scholarship/Stipend for Flying Training

Civil Aviation Department, New Delhi awards Scholarships/Stipend to the Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribe candidates selected for Flying Training up to Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL) Standard in various Flying Clubs/Institutes/ Schools.

Eligibility:Minimum Educational Qualifications:
10+2 or equivalent with Mathematics and Physics as subject. Income: Parents’/Guardian’s income not exceeding Rs.44,500/- per annum. Age: Between 17 to 20 years as on 1st April. Nationality: Indian. Number of Scholarships: 40.

Selection: Initial selection of the candidates is made on the basis of their performance in written test to be conducted at the specified Centres in English, General Knowledge, Maths, Physics & Chemistry.

Flight Attendant (Airhostess/Flight or Air Steward)

For making the journey of the passenger’s trouble-free, comfortable and safe a team of flight attendants on board consists of young men as flight pursuers and young women as air hostesses to assist the travellers. They help the passengers to settle down properly, coordinate security personnel, serve meals, take adequate emergency measures, make announcements about weather and places and looks after the sick and travel prone people.

The term used for male counterpart of an air hostess is ‘Flight Pursuer’ or ‘Air Steward’. Their work profile is identical to that of an air hostess. They check the cargo, keep an account of seats, handle duty-free items and serve drinks on board, collect money and help the hostesses to perform their duties efficiently.

Personal attributes
Stamina to put up with tremendous hard work and erratic hours that go along with the job; a pleasant personality; ability to work as a team player; good height, skin and eyesight and convincing power.

Pay and Perks
Average salary of a flight attendant initially ranges between Rs. 34,000 approx, per month, excluding perks. These figures may vary from airline to airline. The figures would climb up, depending upon experience and performance. However, there are opportunities of promotion to the rank of Senior Hostess/Steward, Cabin Supervisors, Training Manager as well as to the senior administrative positions.

If you are working in international airlines, your salary could be equal to what a pilot gets after a flight in India as flight attendants working in international airlines, generally get daily allowance in the currency of the respective country. Besides this, flight attendant enjoy lucrative perks too.

Eligibility
Age Limit: In India, 19 is the minimum age requirement for a flight attendant. Airlines have specified the age limit as between 19-27. Educational Background: 10+2/equivalent or graduates (in any subject) are eligible to apply for air hostess training programme. Candidates holding diploma/degree in Hotel Management or Tourism management are preferred. You must possess a passport.

Physical Standards:
Height: A female flight attendant must have the height of 157.5 cms and the height requirement for male flight attendant is 163 cms. These are the minimum height requirement for Indian airlines. However, it may vary from airline to airline. For instance, minimum height requirement in Indian Airlines is 5’2″ while other airlines demand more height than that.

Weight:
Airlines want candidate’s weight to be in proportion to his/her height.

Eyesight: Most airlines prefer normal vision or minimum uncorrected distant vision of 6/24 in each eye. Correctable to at least 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other eye. If you are aspiring to work as a flight attendant and wear glasses, then switch over to contact lenses as early as possible. Power of your contact lenses should not exceed -2D (Minus Two Diopters).

Candidates who have undergone any eye surgery to improve their vision or to correct colour blindness, are not eligible to apply.

Teeth:
Healthy white teeth are one of the essentials of a good smile. Swimming has become mandatory requirement in all the airlines. Cleanliness – Flight attendant must take good care of their body cleanliness. Voice Quality: Flight attendant must have quality diction, good pace, proper pitch and be enthusiastic in speech so that listeners can easily understand all the spoken words.

Language Proficiency
A flight attendant must have a good command over English language. Fluency in any other international language is an added advantage but it is not mandatory in India.

Medical Fitness:
Flight attendants have to go through various medical fitness tests.

Selection is done on the basis of a screening test followed by a written test, interview and group discussion. Additional qualification like knowledge of any prominent foreign language, a degree or Diploma in Tourism always adds to your chances of selection.

Airline ticketing
The job entails booking and confirming reservation for passengers on scheduled airline flights. The ticket agents mainly help and guides the customer in planning the route and other arrangements using time tables, airline schedules, reference guides and tariff books, in short, the ticketing staff provide travel assistance to the clients.

Employment opportunities are available after acquiring a degree or diploma in airline ticketing students get placements in travel agencies and even in airlines.

Personal attributes:
Excellent communication skills, courteous mannerism and a pleasant personality. These are the basic traits required in this field.
