Careers in Unani Medicine: Unani Medicine, also known by the name “Unani- tibb”, is a form of traditional medicine, which follows the teachings of Greek physician Hippocrates, and Roman physician Galen. Based on the concept of four humours: Phlegm (Balgham), Blood (Dam), Yellow bile and Black bile (Sauda), Unani Medicine reached India during 12-13 century.
Hakim Ajmal Khan, Hakim Abdul Hameed, Hakim Mohammed Said and Hakim Syed Zillur Rahman were some of the eminent personalities who worked for the promotion of Unani medicine in Indian subcontinent. It is practiced in India and Indian subcontinent.

To fight biopiracy and unethical patents, the Government of India, in 2001, set up the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library as repository of formulations of various systems of Indian medicine.
Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) established in 1979, also under AYUSH, aids and co-ordinates scientific research in Unani System of Medicine through a network of 22 nationwide research Institutes and Units, including two Central Research Institutes of Unani Medicine, at Hyderabad and Lucknow, eight Regional Research Institutes at Chennai,
Bhadrak, Patna, Aligarh, Mumbai, Srinagar, Kolkata and New Delhi, six Clinical Research Units at Allahabad, Bangalore, Karimganj, Meerut, Bhopal and Burhanpur, four Drug Standardisation Research Units at New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Lucknow, a Chemical Research Unit at Aligarh, a Literary Research Institute at New Delhi.
The main objective of Central Council of Indian Medicine is to produce competent Unani Physicians who can handle all sorts of cases medical as well as surgical based on their extensive knowledge about the fundamental theories and the basic principals of the Unani Systems of Medicine with modern advances where necessary to make Unani graduates competent to serve in the medical and health services of the country.
Careers in Unani Medicine – Nature of work
The unani Physician is called Hakim. He/she diagnoses a disease by feeling the and rhythmic expansion of arteries by fingers, temperament of the patient, different complaints, signs and symptoms of the body.
Disease is cured by therapies such as Ilajbil Tadbeer (Regimenal Therapy), Ilajbil Ghiza (Dietotherapy), Ilajbil Dava (Pharmacotherapy) and Ilajbil Yad (Surgery). All the drugs used in compound formulations are made of Herbal, Mineral & Animal origin. These drugs are prepared according to the specific process and methods and hence are safe as well as non-toxic. There are no known side effects of this form of treatment. The medicines administered are according to the temperament of the patient and accelerate the process of recovery. The process also eliminates the risk of drug reaction.
Careers in Unani Medicine – How to enter?
A candidate seeking admission to main Kamil-e- Tib-o-Jarahat (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery) Course must have passed Senior Secondary (12th Standard) / Intermediate examination with Science (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology) or its equivalent examination. OR Has passed the Pretib examination of a one-year duration. Age: 17 years on 1st October in the year of admission for admission to main Kamil-e-Tib-0-Jarahat (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery) Course. Duration: 5Vi-year (including internship of one year). One who wants to go for 1- year Pre-tib Course are required to pass the Intermediate Examination. Pre-tib Course is a full-time course of one-year duration leading to main 4V4 years Unani degree Course and one-year compulsory rotatory internship. Age: 16 years on 1st October in the year of admission for admission to Pre-tib Course of one-year duration.
Note – For Kamil-e-Tib-o-Jarahat Main Course (Urdu Medium) the candidate should have also passed the qualifying examination with Urdu either MIL examination with Urdu.
Post graduate course in Unani Medicine is offered in specialisations such as Moalajat, Ilmul Advia, Tahaffuzi wa Samaji Tib, Ilmul Qabalat wa Amraze Niswan, Ilmul Saidla. It is of 3 years duration.
