Google Ph.D. Fellowship

The Google Ph.D. Fellowship initiated by Google to identify outstanding graduate students performing innovative research in computer science and related fields. This is a highly competitive program that awards up to four named fellowships. The fellows will get support for a maximum duration of four years. The fellows will get the following benefits:

  • A monthly fellowship
  • A contingency grant for expenses like books, stationery, etc.
  • A travel grant for attending conferences

Each fellow will be assigned a Google Sponsor who will mentor the Ph.D. fellow over the duration of the research. The Google Sponsor engagement includes research progress updates, discussions on research direction, etc.

Google also offers Internship opportunities for selected fellows. After selecting the internship interview process only the fellows can do an internship at Google. Fellows should keep in mind that awarding of the fellowship does not guarantee an internship at Google.

  • Applicable allowances and modest affiliation fees, if any

Selected fellows will have an opportunity to audit non-degree courses, gain practical work experience in suitable settings, and conduct research in the USA. This fellowship will not provide allowances for dependents. The grant is not enough to support family members.

Microsoft Research Ph.D. Fellowship

The Microsoft Research Ph.D. Fellowship initiated by Microsoft for Ph.D. students studying at North American universities. These students should be pursuing research aligned with the research areas carried out by Microsoft Research. This fellowship was established in 2008 and supported 152 fellows till now. Many of these fellows have got work within the Microsoft Research organization. Whereas others have got research work within the technology industry or appointed as faculty at leading universities.

The duration of the fellowship is for 2 years. Ph.D. students must be in their 3rd year of studies. They must be nominated by the department chair’s office in the field of their study. This fellowship also offers a salaried internship to selected fellows after clearing the interview process. They can work with leading Microsoft researchers on cutting-edge projects related to the selected fellow’s field of study. The Microsoft Research Ph.D. Fellowship provides the following benefits:

  • Tuition and fees are covered for 2 academic years
  • A living expense of $42,000 USD stipend will be provided while in school for 2 academic years that is 2020-21 and 2021-22
  • The stipend covers only some living expenses. These are childcare, conference fees, and travel, research equipment, meals, rent, etc.
  • An invitation to the 2 days Ph.D. Summit held at one of Microsoft Research’s labs. In this workshop, fellows can meet with Microsoft researchers and other top students to share their research work.
