(c) Madipakkam:

(d) Mylapore:
The area gets water once in two days. Water requirements also met by a bore well. This water is used for toilets and washing. Water is purchased from tankers. Also water purifies installed.

I live in Delhi, Rohini. We get water throughout the week. But it is timely. The water is filtered but we has an R.O. System installed in our house. During summer there is too shortage of water in our area. However, we are informed previously of this shortage and thus, we store water in advance.

Yes, it is important the conserve these resources because their scarcity will create numerous problems.

It will directly effect the health of people. It will lead to may water borne diseases like diarrhoea, dysentery, etc. An ill-health person will not be able to work efficiently. Thus, it is important to make available proper sanitation facilities to all.

Why do you think that this would impact women and girls more acutely?
Answer:
Because both women and girls are given less attention.

Why do you think there are so few cases of private water supply in the world?
Answer:
A private company only wants to make more profit. Thus, if the responsibility of water supply is handed over to private companies there will be a steep rise in the price of water, making it unaffordable for many. The poor will totally suffer. Hence, there are so few cases of private water supply in the world.

Do you think water in Chennai is available and affordable by all? Discuss.
Answer:
No, water in Chennai is not available and affordable for all. On an overage, municipal supply meets only about half the needs of the people of the city. In some areas water is received regulary; areas close to the storage point get more water whereas colonies further away, receive less water.

The worst victims of shortfalls in water supply are the poor. The middle class can manage through a variety of means such as digging bore wells, buying water cans and from tankers. The poor will be the most sufferers as they cannot afford bottled water or dig bore wells.

Question 13.
How is the sale of water by farmers to water dealers in Chennai affecting the local people? Do you think local people can object to such exploitation of ground water? Can the government do anything in this regard?
Answer:
The sale of water by farmers to water dealers in Chennai has badly affected the local people. They have to face acute water crisis in their life. Poor irrigation leads to poor produce.

The local people can object to such exploitation of ground water, since its level has dropped drastically.

Regarding this, the government can ban private companies from entering in towns and villages. It can also punish those farmers who indulge in such practises.

Question 14.
Why are most of the private hospitals and private schools located in major cities and not in towns or rural areas?
Answer:
People in towns or rural areas are poor and thus, cannot afford the costly services rendered by private hospitals and private schools. People in cities are rich and can afford such services.

Question 15.
Do you think the distribution of public facilities in our country is adequate and fair? Give an example of your own to explain.
Answer:
No, the distribution of public facilities in our country in rather adequate nor fair. For example, in posh and VIP areas the supply of electricity is in abundance. People in these areas can avail electricity throughout the 24 hours. They can run ACs, heaters etc. However, in middle class and lower class areas, people get electricity only for a few hours and thus, have to live in darkness and hot temperatures.

Take some of the public facilities in your area, such as water, electricity, etc. Is there scope to improve these? What in your opinion should be done? Complete the table.

Data on some of the public facilities are collected as part of the Census. Discuss with your teacher when and how the Census is conducted.
Answer:
The census is conducted after every 10 years. The entire population of the country is counted. It also notes the (retailed information about the people living in India such as age, schooling, the work they do, etc. This information helps to know about several things such as the number of literate and illiterate people, ratio of males and females, etc.

Question 19.
Private educational institutions – schools, colleges, universities, technical and vocational training institutes are coming up in our country in a big way. On the other hand, educational institutes run by the government are becoming relatively less important. What do you think would be the impact of this? Discuss.
Answer:
No doubt, the monopoly of private educational institutions will be established. In these establishments, money will be the main factor. This will lead to marginalisation of those who belong to the havenots.
