Clinton Fellowship 2023-24: Clinton Fellowship, also known as the AIF William J. Clinton Fellowship, is a program funded by the American India Foundation to provide young individuals the opportunity to pursue an immersive volunteer service program. Individuals who have a strong passion for social and economic development in India are preferred.

Clinton Fellowship Eligibility Criteria

Candidates have to ensure that they fulfill the following criteria to be deemed eligible for the fellowship:

  • Candidates must be an Indian or a U.S citizen.
  • Candidates must have completed their Bachelor’s degree or higher on or before September 1st, 2024.
  • Candidates must be between 21 to 34 years of age on September 1st, 2024.
  • Candidates must also possess
    • a deep commitment to the holistic development of the society.
    • Good professional skills and excellent academic record
    • Candidates must be sensitive and empathetic enough to work with vulnerable societies and communities.

Clinton Fellowship Benefits

Selected Fellows will be provided with the following benefits:

Indian Fellows

  • Insurance coverage
  • Living stipend (monthly)
  • Travel compensation (from hometowns in India)
  • Emergency assistance and support.

American Fellows

  • Insurance coverage
  • Living stipend (monthly)
  • Travel compensation from the USA to India and back (round trip)
  • Emergency assistance and support.

Selected Fellows are also eligible for two weeks of vacation

  • Applicable during the ten-month fellowship
  • Fellows with a Saturday workday will be eligible for a vacation of 20 days.
  • Please note, approval is also required from the host organization.

Clinton Fellowship Responsibilities

Selected Fellows will be working with the American India Foundation’s partner organization. Responsibilities include meeting project and human resources requirements through skill-building and sharing, training and capacity development.

Other responsibilities include program design & implementation, monitoring & evaluating, creation of business plans & strategies, action research & communication.

  • Click “apply” and then sign up.
  • Fill in the required information, cross verify and submit.
  • Candidates will receive an activation link through their email.
  • Follow the instructions and select “AIF William J. Clinton Fellowship”
  • Complete the application and submit.

Essay Questions

As a part of the application process, candidates are required to write essays on the following topics

  • Share your story: Why do you want to serve in India as an AIF Clinton Fellow at this moment in your life? (350 words)
    The answer should address the following points:

    • What brought you here?
    • How does this experience fit into your larger professional and individual development?
    • Why do you specifically want to apply to the AIF Clinton Fellowship?
  • Share your philosophy of service (250 words)
    The answer should address the following points:

    • What does service mean to you?
    • Why do you want to serve?
    • What specific experiences have shaped your philosophy of service?
    • What motivates you when serving people and communities?
  • Outline three (3) skills that you would apply during the course of this Fellowship when working with communities in development. (250 words)
    Please give concrete examples of how you learned each of these skills. What or who motivated you to learn these skills?
  • Tell us about a time when you had to navigate a new, unknown or unfamiliar environment. (250 words)
    The answer should address the following points:

    • What challenges did you face?
    • What did you do to cope?
    • What were some of the lessons you learned?
    • What remain areas that you continue to struggle with?
  • Taking a broader look at development, please respond to the following questions. In your response, please relate and explain how you think these ideas will influence and shape your ten months in service. (350 words)
    The answer should address the following points:

    • Is progress intrinsic to development?
    • Some development initiatives are successful and some aren’t.
    • Even when a problem has been identified, why is there sometimes no tangible change or effect?
    • In your experience and observation, does everyone get an equal voice in deciding what development means for their community and/or country?
  • Candidates must also declare any professional skills, language skills, and personal statements.
  • Candidates are also required to attach their resume/ C.V – Please ensure that the file is attached in PDF format and the maximum size should not exceed 3 MB.
  • Candidates are also required to attach two references and their contact details. However, the AIF strongly prefers three recommendations to better understand the applicant’s abilities.
  • Preference of interview venue. (Either Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai or  Chennai).

Note: The system will generate an automatic email to the referrers with detailed instructions on recording their responses. Recommendations through direct email or mail are not accepted.

Clinton Fellowship Selection Process & Selection Criteria

Selection Process

  • Initially, the applications are screened and scrutinized by the AIF personnel and other stakeholders from India as well as America.
  • Grades are awarded on the basis of a numeric scale and the candidates that surpass the criteria move on to the next process – interview.
  • The selected candidates will have to appear for a Skype interview with AIF personnel.
  • Candidates that cleared the Skype interview round will move on to the in-person interview.

  • The AIF seeks out applicants with a strong passion and commitment to the economic and social development of India.
  • Academic excellence is also a deciding factor.
  • Ability to volunteer tirelessly for the upbringing and development of vulnerable communities.
  • The candidate that possesses the knack to readily adapt and understand diverse cultures.
  • The foundation also seeks candidates with strong leadership skills and an unambiguous entrepreneurial vision.
  • Lastly, working knowledge of Indian languages is highly recommended but not essential.
