Shastri Research Student Fellowship 2023-2024: Shastri Research Student Fellowship (SRSF) is an initiative of the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute, a binational non-profit organization that supports funding for education and research. The Fellowship program is applicable for candidates pursuing their Bachelors, Masters, M.Phils and even doctoral and postdoctoral students in recognized Canadian and Indian universities.

Shastri Research Student Fellowship Overview

Shastri Research Student Fellowship is applicable for all fields of study from Humanities and Social Sciences to Arts, Commerce and Management. However, applications from focus areas of the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute and priority areas of the Ministry of Human Resource Management such as Water Resource Management, Food Security, Agriculture Science and Technology, Gender, Bilateral Trade & Investment, Environmental Sciences, and Energy will be given preference.

Currently, there are three types of Shastri Research Student Fellowships, with each catering to different groups of individuals.

  1. Shastri Research Student Fellowship for Doctoral Students.
  2. Shastri Research Student Fellowship for Postdoctoral Students.
  3. Shastri Indo Canadian Fellowship.

Shastri Research Student Fellowship for Doctoral Students

The Shastri Research Student Fellowship for Doctoral Students, as the name indicates, is primarily awarded for candidates enrolled in Doctoral programs in Canada or India. The fellowship provides the necessary support for the candidates in the form of financial aid.

Eligibility Criteria

If the following criteria are fulfilled, the candidates are deemed eligible for the fellowship

  • Doctoral candidates that have secured an admission/registration for a full-time P.hD program in a recognized Indian or Canadian University.
  • The candidate’s synopsis must be approved by a competent authority before the last date of the fellowship application.
  • The candidate’s institution or university must be a member of the SICI. A complete list of SICI member institutions can be found here.
  • The candidate must possess oral and written proficiency in English.
  • The age bracket for the candidates is between 21-35 years of age.

Application Procedure

The application process and requirements for the fellowship is as follows:

  • Visit SICI’s official website and register a new account https://www.sicigms.org/login
  • Complete the application form and attach all the required documents before September 30, 2023.
  • The candidate must obtain a ‘Supervisor authorization’ from their research guide or supervisor before commencing the application process.
  • The candidate must also provide two reference letters, one of which must be from the Head of Department or the thesis supervisor.
  • The candidates must receive a letter of invitation or affiliation from the host institution. The host must also be a member institution of the SICI.
  • Candidates must attach a certificate of ethical approval (if applicable)
  • Passport copy
  • In case the candidate is employed, the employer’s endorsement is a must.

Note: In the reference letter, the candidates have to request their thesis supervisor to approve the synopsis of their thesis and also indicate the stage of the research. Research that is at the advanced stage of submission will be rejected.

Benefits

  • Selected candidates will be awarded CAD 560 per week (Est.= 32,374.76 Indian Rupee)
  • The duration of the fellowship is up to 4 months.

Shastri Research Student Fellowship for Postdoctoral Students

Shastri Research Student Fellowship for Postdoctoral Students enables candidates who have been awarded a P.hD degree to pursue further research in Canada or India. The candidate is required to apply for the fellowship within five years of receiving the P.hD degree. Moreover, candidates are not required to have an academic position in order to apply.

Eligibility Criteria

If the following criteria are fulfilled, the candidates are deemed eligible for the fellowship:

  • Candidates who are currently working as a postdoctoral fellow in any of the SICI member institutions are eligible to apply.
  • The candidates must possess a doctoral degree which is awarded by a Canadian or an Indian institution.
  • Candidates are required to apply within five years of being awarded a doctoral degree.
  • The candidate must possess oral and written proficiency in English.
  • The age bracket for the candidates is between 30-45 years of age.

Application Procedure

The application process and requirements for the fellowship is as follows:

  • Complete the application form and attach all the required documents December 2023.
  • Also, the candidates have to submit proof of their post-doctoral degree or their post-doctoral fellowship must be approved at the time of submitting the application.
  • The candidates must receive a letter of invitation or affiliation from the host institution. The host must also be a member institution of the SICI.
  • The candidate must also provide two reference letters towards their candidature.
  • In case the candidate is employed, the employer’s endorsement is a must.
  • Candidates must attach a certificate of ethical approval (if applicable)
  • Passport copy
  • Incomplete applications will be rejected.

Shastri Research Student Fellowship for Canadian Students

This fellowship is for Canadian students who want to pursue a course or an internship at Indian universities, provided it falls under the purview of the SICI. The list of member universities is available, click here.

Eligibility Criteria

If the following criteria are fulfilled, the candidates are deemed eligible for the fellowship:

  • Candidate must be from any recognized Canadian university that falls under the purview of the SICI.
  • Candidates must have obtained not less than 65% marks.
  • Candidates must be above 18 years of age at the time of application.
  • Candidates must not be pursuing or enrolled in another degree it diploma simultaneously.
  • Candidates who have enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree and have completed six months or one semester from Canadian universities with one to three semesters remaining in their program are eligible to apply for the fellowship.
  • The candidate must possess oral and written proficiency in English.
  • The age bracket for the candidates is between 21-25 years of age.

Application Procedure

The application process and requirements for the fellowship is as follows:

  • Visit SICI’s official website and register a new account: https://www.sicigms.org/login
  • Complete the application form and attach all the required documents before December 2023 (tentative: precise dates to be updated soon).
  • Candidates have to procure a no-objection certificate from their current university or institution.
  • The candidates must receive a letter of invitation or affiliation from the host institution. The host must also be a member institution of the SICI.
  • The candidate must also provide two reference letters towards their candidature.
  • Candidates must attach a certificate of ethical approval (if applicable)
  • Passport copy
  • Copies of transcripts from the university for all the years studied.
  • Education certificate (from senior secondary)
  • Incomplete applications will be rejected.

Benefits

  • Selected candidates will be awarded CAD 500 per week.
  • The duration of the fellowship is up to 8 to 12 weeks.

How To Apply for Shastri Research Student Fellowship?

Candidates can fill the application form along with all required documents at GMS Portal on or before September 30, 2023, by 5:00 PM (IST).

Shastri Research Student Fellowship Package

The fellowship packages will include the following benefits:

  • Airfare (economy class) from a place of origin to the place of affiliation through the most direct route.
  • Visa fee
  • Overseas insurance
  • Research allowance (doctoral candidates only)

Shastri Research Student Fund Disbursements

  • Funds will be disbursed in two equal installments.
  • The first installment will be released on signing the letter of agreement between the host institute and the SICI
  • The second installment will be released upon submission of midterm progress.
  • The remaining 10% will be released on submission and approval of the final report to the SICI.
