A Brief on NPTEL Course Details

National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning or NPTEL is an initiative platform for aspirants taken by the seven Indian Institutes. It is a combined collaboration of the IITs ( IIT Bombay, Kanpur, Delhi, Madras, Roorkee, Guwahati, and Kharagpur) and IISc to create an online platform to disseminate course contents in the field of Science and Technology.

NPTEL is a project that originated during the years 1999 to 2003 from several deliberations between Education giants such as the Indian Institute of Management (IIMs), Carnegie Mellon University(CMU), and IITs.

NPTEL came into existence after a joint proposal put forward by the five IITs and IISc in the reassurance of creating 100 web-based supplement courses along with 100 video-based supplement courses. These courses are offered at a course duration of forty-five minutes per session.

The Web-based supplement course programs vowed to cover materials that could encompass within forty hours approximately. Initially, the platform offered course programs in the five branches of engineering like Computer, Electronics, Civil, Communication and Mechanical, and Electrical and core science programs.

The course program was initially catered to all engineering students and was a mandate course structure to be taken during the undergraduate engineering program in India.

The course curriculum for all the course contents offered by the NPTEL platform is based on the model curriculum provided by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). However, certain aspects of the curriculum are also a part of the significant syllabi of affiliating Universities in India.

Besides the web and video course contents, NPTEL also offers certification programs for students to opt for four or eight to twelve hours per certification course.

NPTEL Online Certification

NPTEL Online Certification is an offline exam organized by the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning to gain a certificate in various courses available on the NPTEL website.

The enrolment to and learning from these courses involves no additional charges. A physical, proctored certification examination is directed through a fee of Rs. 1000/- per session. Additionally, a certificate is provided to the qualified participants through the participating institutions and industry, when applicable.

NPTEL online certification is organized in more than 25 well-established institutional centers. The examination pattern of a course will differ accordingly.
