(i) What is an ecosystem?
Answer:
An ecosystem is a system formed by the interaction of all living organisms with each other and with the physical and chemical factors of the environment in which they live, all linked by transfer of energy and material.

(ii) What do you mean by natural environment?
Answer:
The combination of physical environment like mountains, rocks, oceans, etc., and biological environment such as that of trees, animals and anything made by nature is termed as natural environment.

Land, water, air, plants and animals comprise of the natural environment.

(iii) Which are the major components of the environment?
Answer:
The major components of the environment are the biotic and the abiotic elements and creations of human beings.

(iv) Give four examples of human made environment.
Answer:
Examples of human made environment are“

  1. Buildings
  2. Roads
  3. Bridges
  4. Parks, etc.

(v) What is lithosphere?
Answer:
Lithosphere is the solid crust or the hard top layer of the earth. It is made up of rocks and minerals and covered by a thin layer of soil. It is an irregular surface with various land forms such as mountains, plateaus, plains, valleys, etc.

(vi) Which are the two major components of biotic environment?
Answer:
The two major components of biotic environment are plants and animals.

(vii) What is biosphere?
Answer:
Biosphere is a narrow zone of the earth where land, water and air interact with each other to support life. Both plant and animal kingdoms together comprise of the biosphere.

Give reasons-
(i) Man modifies his environment.
Answer:
Human beings interact with environment and modify it according to their needs. Early humans adapted themselves to the natural surroundings. They led a simple life and fulfilled their requirements from the nature around them. With time needs grew and became more varied. Humans learn new ways to use and change environment. They learn to grow crops, domesticate animals and lead a settled life. With more passage of time more modification was made in the environment by man to suite his needs.

(ii) Plants and animals depend on each other.
Answer:
Both plant and animal kingdoms together make the biosphere or the living world. All plants, animals and human beings depend on their immediate surroundings. Often they are also interdependent on each other. This relation between the organisms and their surroundings form an ecosystem. Plants provide animals food, on the other hand, animals provide carbon dioxide to plants to make food. Thus, both are depended on each other.

Activity-
Imagine an ideal environment where you would love to live. Draw the picture of your ideal environment.
Answer:

An Ideal Environment

  2. An adequate number of plants (forests) and animals (wildlife).
